SESSION 1 and 2- Classification of animals (UPDATED 2)
SESSION 1 and 2- Classification of animals
The learning situation will revolve around the European Commission. To do so, we will first play a video for the children to understand what it is, its functions and tasks. The link to the video is as follows: https://youtu.be/nWpgO1EPO_Y?feature=shared
Then, we will explain the functioning of the classrooms during this learning situation and we will involve them in the commission by providing them with a story. As the sessions go on, the story will develop.
The objectives to work on in this session are:
- 2.1. Classify animals according to their natural habitat.
- 2.2. Identify the different types of animals and their characteristics.
The estimated time of the session will be approximately 2 session. In the first hour, we are going to start with an individual questionnaire and then we are going to explain students the content. In the second hour, they will complete the padlet.
LESSON 1
Part 1:
The teacher will introduce the first part of the story:
“Today the environment is a big issue for all of us and the European Commission has a big job ahead of it to help improve our planet. In addition, they have had a problem, and that is that someone has stolen the most important documents they had to start mitigating the problem. Therefore, they need your help and today they have sent us the first message”
The teacher will provide the students the message explained before and a questionnaire:
Message:
“Hello boys and girls, as your teacher told you, we need your support and effort. We have to tell you something and that is that they have stolen our reports about the different animals that live on Earth. It is very important to save them.
As you can imagine, not everyone can be part of something as important as this commission, but we know that you can. That's why your teacher is going to give you the test that every member of this commission has to pass to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge.”
A form will be given to each child so we can check the previous knowledge that our students have as well as they warm up with the previous knowledge.

Part 2:
The class will be divided into groups of 5 members each one. The criteria we will follow is according to the answers of the previous questionnaire. We will try to include in each group different students’ profiles and levels of knowledge in the subject. The groups will be the same during the following sessions.
Once the groups are formed, they will have to search information on the internet about the different animal families and their main characteristics. For doing it, we are going to give them some tips to do it properly as well as the contents they should look for.
Tips: Contents:
Once the information is provided and they are clearer about how to search for it, they will look for the required content. As they find it, they will enter it in the padlet. As we can see in the poster above, the information students will have to complete in the padlet is:
- Animal families living on our planet: Mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish.
Then, they will answer whether these families are:
- Oviparous or viviparous.
- Carnivore, herbivore or omnivore.
- Vertebrate or invertebrate.
- Aquatic, terrestrial or aerial.
Evaluation
1. The previous ideas will be evaluated through the Google Forms that will be delivered to each student.
2. The answers put into the padlet will help the teacher to know if his/her students have searched the information correctly.
3. While students search the information, the teacher will observe if they are doing the required activity correctly.
LESSON 2
In the first part of the class, the class will share and discuss what the groups have put in the padlet based on the information they have found on the Internet.
In the second part of the lesson, the teacher will explain the contents about the main families of animals and their principal characteristics. The methodology used by the teacher will be the exposition, with the support of canva or any other presentation website.
The structure of the presentation should be like this:
